What is your refund policy?
We are currently not set up to process refunds; however, you will be able to transfer your registration to someone else if needed. Superhero 5k registrants will also be able to transfer their entry to the Virtual 5k option.
What is a virtual race, exactly?
EXCELLENT question. While we hope that the turnout for Kev’s 5k will be astronomical, we understand not everyone will be able to be there. If you sign up for a “virtual 5k”, you can complete the race anywhere. Your race registration fee will directly benefit the SuperHERO Foundation, just like if you were with us in person on race day.
We’ll ask for your pledge, i.e. how you plan to run, walk, jump, soar for at least 1 mile or 20 minutes on the morning of October 13. We’ll mail you your race gear, including packet, medal, and t-shirt. We just ask that in return you snap a Superhero Selfie of you running with us that morning. (Email it to us or post it on social media with #5ksuperheroselfie.)
We’re keeping a running track of all Kev’s 5k virtual runner registrants through this map! Check it out to see where people are running and walking on September 29 in memory of Kevin.
I’m not in to running or walking, but I'd love to help.
Great! Please get in contact with us about volunteering here.
What is the deadline to register? Can I register on race day?
Online registration will be open through packet pickup. Same day registration is available on the morning of the race starting at 7:15 am. Virtual registration will be open until 8am on October 13.
T-shirts will not be guaranteed for same day registrants or for those who register after October 1.
I’m REALLY excited. What can I do to prep beforehand?
Holy Chips and Bibs, Batman -so are we! We created a Spotify playlist that has some classic pump up tunes, as well as a few of Kevin’s favorites, to get you excited until September. Check it out here, or just take a listen below!
When is the Superhero 5k and Fun Run?
Race Day is Sunday, October 13, 2019. We’re planning on holding the race every fall near Kevin’s birthday (October 7).
The 5k starts at 8:30am, followed by the Fun Run at 8:45am. We recommend arriving at least 20 minutes before the race starts.
What happens if it rains on race day?
The race will go on as planned. Please dress accordingly. Turn your cape into a poncho!
For extreme weather (lightening), there will likely be a delayed start. For super extreme events (blizzard, e.g.), we're packing our capes and heading to Florida, but we'll give as much advance notice as possible.
Where is the race?
The race start/finish line is in beautiful Wheaton Regional Park; follow directions to the 2002 Shorefield Road Entrance, as there are several entrances to the park. Packet pick up and registration will be in the gravel lot next to the train station (take the first right in the roundabout).
Parking and Mass Transit
For GPS, please use the Wheaton Regional Park entrance on Shorefield Road (2002 Shorefield Road, Silver Spring MD 20902). There are two large parking lots for easy access, which you can view on the map here, but we encourage carpooling if possible.
You can also take Metro’s Red Line to Glenmont Station, and then take a short (less than a mile) uber/taxi over to the park.
Are dogs and strollers allowed?
There are few things we love more than superdogs and superbabies. Strollers are welcome on the 1-mile course, but unfortunately we do not recommend strollers on the 5k course.
Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome on the 1-mile course, but unfortunately for safety reasons we cannot have dogs run on the 5k course.
Where is packet/cape pick up?
Packet (Cape) Pick Up will be held on Saturday, 10/12 at a location TBA.
Packet pick up and same day registration will also be available on race day starting at 7am.
Can someone else pick up my packet?
Yes! Just make sure you provide them with a copy of your QR code and/or confirmation email, so they have your correct information.
Will there be prizes?
We'll have cash prizes for top men and women's finishers, and non-monetary prizes (but still really good!!) for other place finishers. We also will have age group awards for the top male and female finishers in the following age groups:
13 and under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39,40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and older
Non-racing prizes include Best Costume for kids and adults, Best Team Costume, and Best Virtual Costume/Spirit!
We are also giving out some pretty sweet door prizes for early registrants.
How is the race timed?
We’ve partnered with Montgomery County Road Runners Club to provide IPICO timing and chip services. Results will be posted to the website by 4pm on October 13.
The Fun Run will not be timed.
What is the course/park like?
The run winds through beautiful scenery in Wheaton Regional Park and Brookside Gardens. The fun run is a 1-mile easy, paved course that travels by Pine Lake and a large playground, and ends at the carousel.
You can see photos of the route, and view a map of the 5k and 1 mile run here.
We love Wheaton Regional Park, and encourage you to pack a picnic and make a day off it! We love Brookside Gardens and the nearby Nature Center. There are also miles of wooded hiking trails, a huge playground, a dog park, an ice rink, and lots of space to play and explore.
